RHYS SEVEN's Artist Biography
Rhys Seven is an emmerging Canadian contemporary multi disciplinary artist who lives and works in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was raised in Medicine Hat before living in Lethbridge, Alberta, Burnaby, British Columbia, Prague, Czech Republic, and Calgary, Alberta before returning to his hometown.
During his childhood he uncovered creativeness observing his father paint landscapes. At age 5 his father invited him to paint with him. This moment would stay with him. Although when growing up Rhys would often spend his spare time sketching, not painting. His passion for painting would later develop after completing his first degree.
School was a struggle for Rhys as he was often uninterested and distracted with his drawings. He did earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree through the university of Lethbridge, which he treasures the most. The support he received from his high school art teacher Mr. James Jesse was a considerable turning point for him without his knowledge at the time. Mr. Jesse submitted his name for an art scholarship along with his track and field coach Mr. Grant Sisko, which forced him to attend university after high school. Rhys would find his appreciation for education during this time, and often claims he is "a student for life". Upon completing his first degree he moved to Vancouver where he attended Film School. Six years later he would later return to University for a Bachelor degree in Education after his teaching experience in Prague.
Currently, Rhys relies on his desire for beauty, poetics, and education to determine his subject matter. This artist brings an extensive mastery of color theory, along with his own visually distinct sense of character, and compositional elements to his work. His palette is present and complex, with the use of latex acrylic paint. The accidental placement of a line or marking forces the artist to work through difficult periods, which contributes greatly to the unique layering and depth his work exhibits.
Rhys Seven's art has rarely been shown in public, but has work in several private collections across North America and parts of Europe. Travois Ale Works artist project is an invitational exhibition that was officially Rhys' first public exposition in March, 2020.
During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown worldwide, Rhys took this opportunity to expand his creativity through podcasting. Recognizing the value and importance of journaling he released "Unchained INSPIRHYSION" on November 07, 2020 as a working audio artist journal. Rhys felt it was of great value to share his journey to insure his spirit of collaboration and develop a continuous flow of creativity both for himself and those around him.
