Painting
I rely on our desires for beauty, poetics, and seduction to determine my subject matter. I think of my work as a collection of improvisational accidents tracing my actions through paint, light, and ink. These works have been grounded in pleasure and aesthetics. The accidental placement of a line or marking forces me through difficult junctures of development, this contributes greatly to the unique layering and depth my work exhibits.
The paintings have not been touched when applying the paint during the development. Paint has been applied through casting, dripping, and splattering, often from reclaimed disposable plastic knives. Only when I am finished will I use a brush to sign them. This forces me to work through several uncontrolled challenges.
Continuous line drawings I produce have the opposite approach. Completely hands on, through the use of single continuous line my actions are documented permanently as my hand races across the surface. This line is uninterrupted until completion, and posses numerous challenges staying committed to the piece for a fixed time.
Although there may not always be material similarities between the different pieces they are linked by the restrictions I place upon myself as an artist. I embrace the imperfect marks with all my work. I have found the histories of abstraction, impressionism, and pop art to be useful in the development of my style.
